How the date code works
- Digits 1–2: year. 20 means 2020.
- Digits 3–4: week. A.O. Smith’s example is week 37 of 2020, September 7–13, 2020.
- The rest isn’t date information.
Older A.O. Smith heaters used other layouts that the published guide doesn’t explain. So we only read year codes from 2009 onward, and say “unable to determine” for anything else. The guide comes from A.O. Smith’s international site. Check the printed date on your label if you have one.

Where to find the serial number
The rating label is on the side of the tank, usually in the upper half. The serial number is printed next to the model number.
Age, installation and warranty
This is the date the heater was made, not when it was installed. To check coverage, use A.O. Smith warranty verification. Aruvello doesn’t determine coverage.
